Chair in Digital Health, University of Notre Dame

Professor Yogesan’s expertise includes ophthalmic diagnostics and imaging, digital health, telemedicine, machine learning and artificial intelligence, and imaging device development. He is a serial inventor and an entrepreneur with many of his inventions are used around the world including NASA using his eye imaging device at the International Space Station. He has won many inventor of the year awards. He has considerable experience in commercialisation and building products from bench to bed. He has a patent portfolio of over 35 patent applications. Prof Yogesan has experience working in USA, Norway, Australia, Japan and Singapore.

Professor Yogesan was the Director of the Australian Telehealth Research and Development Centre (based in Perth). Prof Yogesan is also a visiting scholar at Harvard University. He was a Fulbright Scholar to Stanford University School of Medicine in 2011 and worked on developing a non-invasive imaging device to screen premature babies for retinal abnormalities.

Yogesan’s research focuses on early detection of diseases non-invasively from the eye as the window to the body and use of technologies to improve health care delivery for the underserved. His team was the first to demonstrate the relationship between the retina (eye) and AD, and also the first to develop ocular biomarkers and an eye test for the non-invasive early detection of AD. This pioneering research has lead to new knowledge about the progress of the disease. His current research is about demonstrating that amyloid plaque in the eye can be removed using curcumin (found in turmeric spice), and may prevent or delay the onset of AD. Early detection of AD through a non-invasive screening test will accelerate the development of treatments, providing huge market potential and decreasing the burden of disease worldwide.

He is a member of the Freshwater Bay Rotary Club and helping to provide free eye screenings for school children using innovative software system.

Professor Yogesan’s impacts range from the fundamentally knowledge-based to commercial reality and social equality. Three of his innovations, the EyeScan device, the Remote-I smart health system, and Check-I vision testing (specifically for children), have been implemented, commercialised, and are now being used around the globe (e.g. in Guangdong Province, China).
